Today we begin a series on God’s 10 Commandments, known as the Decalogue, a Greek word meaning “the ten words.” Since Christians believe that all Scripture is inspired by God (2 Tim 3:16), the Decalogue is no exception. Not only is all Scripture God-breathed, but all Scripture points to Jesus, as He said in John 5:39 “You search the Scriptures because you think that in them you have eternal life; & it is they that bear witness about Me.” The Old Testament scrolls, known as the TaNak, spoke of Christ. Jesus knew He was God the Son.
As the sermon series begins, the foundation laid is that all Scripture is inspired by God. What this emphasizes is that, because all Scripture comes directly from God, all Scripture that have commands from God should be obeyed entirely. John 14:21 “Whoever has My commandments & keeps them, he it is who loves Me. And he who loves Me will be loved by My Father, & I will love him & manifest Myself to him.”
The purpose of this sermon series is to point out that believers do not have a choice as to which Scriptures will be obeyed, whether Old Testament or New Testament. Obeying the Lord because of our position in Christ and trying to gain acceptance by obedience are two different issues. Hopefully this series will elaborate on the power of God’s Word – His whole counsel.
