Exodus 20:12 and Deuteronomy 5:16 both record the 5th Commandment regarding honoring our parents. The Exodus text gives us one result of obeying this command, but the Deuteronomy text adds a positive result. God is awesome. The question is, with regard to the positive results, is whether they are absolute promises from God, or general promises. The type of promise is critical, and our interpretation of these results depend on how we are reading and recognizing the genre of writing. At the end of the sermon, some discussion on the Old Testament application to honoring parents is outlined. In Pt 2 (next sermon) the New Testament application is a topic of discussion.
