When interpreting God’s Commandments, we need to keep in mind that they have both broad [far reaching] and narrow [very specific application] interpretation. This sermon addresses this reality and uses the teachings of Jesus, in His sermon on the mount, to demonstrate the narrow and broad interpretation of Law. The term is synecdoche, which is simply a figure of speech in which a part is made to represent the whole (and vice-versa).
The Commandment studied in this sermon is Exodus 20:3 “You shall have no other gods before me.” Are there really “false gods”? This is addressed in the sermon, as well as the enslavement of believing and worshipping imaginary gods.
